Multi–Grammy nominee and virtuoso bassist Nilson Matta stands as a defining force in the evolution and global embrace of Brazilian jazz, particularly within the United States. Since arriving in New York in 1985, he quickly became an integral presence on the international jazz scene, performing and recording alongside luminaries such as Joe Henderson, Kenny Barron, Paquito D’Rivera, Randy Brecker, Herbie Mann, and Lee Konitz.
These collaborations, combined with his rich artistic foundation in Brazil—where he worked with icons such as João Gilberto, Hermeto Pascoal, and Chico Buarque—have shaped a distinctive musical voice. Matta’s refined sensibility, rhythmic authority, and lyrical phrasing have made him one of the most sought-after bassists in both Brazilian music and contemporary jazz.
It was therefore only natural that Yo-Yo Ma selected Matta for his acclaimed Brazilian project. Their collaborations on the Grammy-winning recordings Obrigado Brazil and Brazil – Live in Concert led to an extensive two-year world tour, bringing their music to audiences across continents.
As a founding member of the celebrated ensembles Trio da Paz and Brazilian Trio, Matta has also established himself as a compelling bandleader, composer, arranger, and producer. His project Nilson Matta Brazilian Voyage reflects his artistic vision, while his album East Side Rio Drive earned a Grammy nomination in 2017. Among his recent endeavors is a collaborative recording with Brazilian pianist Alfredo Cardim.
Beyond performance, Matta remains deeply committed to education and mentorship. A member of the International Society of Bassists, he is a frequent featured artist at its conventions and has conducted masterclasses around the world. His years of teaching at New York City’s Bass Collective and his ongoing dedication to sharing Brazilian musical traditions underscore a career defined not only by artistic excellence, but by a profound commitment to inspiring future generations.
